Which Base Mounted Winch fits your project?

Which Base Mounted Winch fits your project?

There are many different types of base mounted winches available on the market, each one suited to it's own individual application. The capacities of these winches can vary from 10 tonnes to a large 200 tonnes. Here at Rotrex Winches we have air, hydraulic, electric and diesel winches all in stock.

This guide will help you to decide which base mounted winch is right for your project.

Hydraulic winches

Base mounted hydraulic winches are hydraulic operated winches which can come with one or two drums. The drums on these winches are powered by an internally mounted motor. For the safety of the operator, this type of winch often comes with auto fail-safe braking. Models such as the Liftstar 600H also include a secondary auto fail-safe band-brake mounted on the drum to prevent any issues. The Liftstar 600H also requires a hydraulic feed from a separate hydraulic power unit (HPU) and control station, which we offer.

Air winches

In comparison with hydraulic winches, base mounted air winches are powered by an air gear motor via gearing inside the winch, coming with the ability to vary the speed through the control lever. Many Liftstar winches also come with auto fail-safe internal multi-disc braking. Examples of this type of winch include the Liftstar 1500, which comes fitted with an automatic load-limiting device. While most air winches are single drum, the likes of the SAMIIA TSOR can come with two drums.

Electric winches

Base mounted electric winches are electronically driven and operated winches. The drum is often driven by a 415 v 3 electric motor via an internal gear reduction unit. These winches can be operated by a push-button pendant controller or buttons mounted on the winch, and can be single speed in both directions. As these are specific pieces of equipment, electric winches must be installed by suitably qualified people. Examples of electric winches include the NIM E0.5 and the Colt 6E.

Diesel winches

Base mounted diesel winches are powered by diesel engines via a torque converter and gear train, and can be braked with a foot-controlled band brake which is fitted to the drum. The speed of the winch can be controlled through a throttle attached to the engine and a two-speed gear lever. Examples of this type of winch include the TR2.
