However, cable drum trailers are all slightly different and it can be difficult to make the right choice. Do you need a single, twin or multi axle cable drum trailer? Will you be using it on the road or are you looking for a model more suitable for use on a site? Below, we explore some of the different types of cable drum trailers available and the benefits of each.
Highway Range Cable Drum Trailers
Highway range cable drum trailers tend to be single axle and are equipped with features such as braking and road lighting which allow them to conform to EEC directives. They are also specially designed to travel with a full load at road speeds in the UK and most European countries – the CD140 cable drum trailer can carry a potential payload of 5,200kg.
As they are designed to handle the pressures of the road, these types of cable drum trailer have a maximum towing speed of 100km/h (62mph), making them perfect for the standard busy motorway. As is standard on all models, the drum is kept safe during transit thanks to mechanical locks.
Site Range Cable Drum Trailers
As one would expect, site range cable drum trailers are better suited to lighter site-based travel rather than heavy travel on the motorway. They have a single axle and have braking and lighting features similar to the highway range, but the towing speed is generally lower. Our site range trailers are able to travel at speeds from 15km/h to 40km/h.
However, because they are expected to carry less, their potential payload is higher: the CD250S can carry up to 10,000kg. Like the highway range, site trailers like the CD60S also come fitted with a hydraulic lift/lower system which is operated with a hand pump. This enables cable drums to be handled safely and easily, no matter their weight.
Twin Axle and Multi Axle Cable Drum Trailer
These twin axle cable drum trailers are best suited for industrial size cable drums, requiring them to be able to carry extremely heavy payloads. This necessitates their having more than one axle. The largest trailer available in this range is the CD980S, which can carry an enormous payload of 50,000kg.
However, because of the extremely large weights involved, the multi axle cable drum trailers we stock are often quite slow, with a maximum speed range of 10 to 20km/h in order to carry their loads safely.
